We take a break for lunch and Mitchell runs into a pharmacy to grab ointment and bandages before we head back to the hotel. Once there, I take a hot shower, washing the blood from my hair and by the time I’m out, the food has arrived.

My eye doesn’t look as bad once I’m cleaned up. Definitely some bruising and an inch long cut along my hairline. I pat on foundation to cover everything up.

“Well, look who no longer looks like Frankenstein.” Mitchell grins as I sit down to eat.

I say nothing, just flip him a bird and take a spoonful of my soup. We eat in silence for a while then he asks, “Are you going to be okay?”

“I don’t know yet,” I tell him honestly. “It just feels too overwhelming, too impossible.”

He nods. “I know what you mean.”

He chews some more before he adds, “I’m so sorry for everything that’s happened to you. I didn’t know. I mean, I knew a few things — like the baby — but I didn’t know all the rest.”

I smile a watery smile. “You’re not alone, I didn’t know most of that stuff, either.” Shaking my head, I continue, “Now that I know about my mom’s illness, it all makes total sense. Back then, she just seemed like a bitch, but only toward the end.”

I push the soup bowl away. “She used to brush my hair or hold me in her lap. I have really good memories of her too. We’d go to the mall and shop, get pedicures together, stuff like that. But as I got older, she just seemed to get meaner. She’d be sick a lot with migraines. Well, not migraines, I suppose.”

Mitchell drops his fork and shakes his head. “I’m trying to get the timeline of everything in my head. I mean, this has been going on for over fifty years. I can’t imagine how many others are just like you and me, at the mercy of these twisted fucks.”

I know, I can’t believe it either.

“Can I ask a personal question?” He’s chewing his bottom lip.

“I suppose, if I can opt out of answering if it digs too deep.”

“Sure. How did you get involved with Richard to start with?”

I look down into my bowl, the tomato soup only half finished, the barely touched grilled cheese sandwich beside it. It’s my favorite meal in the world, warm comfort food. I’ve not been allowed to eat it in years.

I take another sip from my spoon, then another. Mitchell stays silent as I play through the memories, then sit back and tell him everything … the rape, the baby, the abandonment. I still can’t absorb the fact that Richard is my father, and Liliana’s. She could have been born with a terrible birth defect because of his twisted ways. I feel dirty just thinking about it.

“I remember the first time we met,” Mitchell says, a little smile playing on his lips. “You’d been shopping and I was sent to take you home and make sure you had something to eat.
